She later attended college at Murray State University and later transferred to Austin Peay State University. At Austin Peay, she met Robert Thompson and they married in 1951. Robert and Barbara lived 10 years in Lexington, Kentucky while Robert worked as office manager for J. The name of the home was Sandidge (names after Dr. Sandidge Dickinson) and Barbara thoroughly enjoyed recreating the history of the home and its surroundings. They lived in the home (which was listed on the State Historical Register) until they moved back to Clarksville and Robert became the Accounts and Budgets Director for Montgomery County. She was a charter member of the Modern Club, member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery County Historical Society, and a member of First Baptist Church.
