My Dutch passport doesn't prove my nationality!?The complexity of Dutch nationality law due to the several methods of (unjust) automatic loss of nationality. As a Specialist Dutch Nationality Lawyer (jurist) I get more and more questions about passport applications and how people can prove they are still Dutch. This mainly because the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is increasing the amount of questions and demands for evidence of (parent's) nationality at passport renewals. And yes, having a passport does not legally evidence that you are (still) Dutch. Maybe the previous passport was issued incorrectly, or maybe you meanwhile lost your Dutch nationality, or maybe you parents did and you shared in the loss? How far is the Minister of Foreign Affairs willing to take these increasingly difficult passport applications? Because legally someone can be Dutch one day, and have lost their nationality the next. So, your evidence is ultimately only good for one day, the same day. If all evidence was dated on the date of application then the consular officer could certainly be sure the person is still Dutch on just that day. However, one day later... well, you could no longer be Dutch. Often without realising it yourself, or maybe you are trying to cheat the system. Should they now insist on any evidence being dated no older than the same day? And then what? If the passport is then issued (currently taking ages to get one printed/issued) then it could already be invalid by the time it is handed over to the applicant. Already since the advent of the Dutch nationality law (1893) there has been an official presumption that a person is Dutch for 5 or, adults now, 10 years. To assume is to.... Thus legally not always correct. If the Minister wants to go fool-proof then this is practically impossible. Are we sure that the consular staff member, or the minister self, is still Dutch? Can he/she evidence this? No... not within the current law. So, let's stop this bureaucratic drive for perfection and make passport applications more and more difficult. There is no practically possible end to this, unless the law changes (yes please). FYI, the same applies to any (Dutch?) person resident in the Netherlands. You don't need to live outside the Netherlands/EU to lose your Dutch nationality automatically. Are you still Dutch? I know I am, but none of us can actually evidence this due to the current law. Thanks for sharing.If the passport does not prove your citizenship to the Kimgdom of The Netherlands, what actually still does ? How to prove it ? Bear in mind that EU Citizenship is conditioned under the TFUE by national citizenship, which is relevant at any travel outside EU and Schengen.The Dutch passport, in line with all EU passports, indeed clearly mentions one's nationality. Also, nationality is normally not cancelled as long the passport is valid, is it ?The weird thing in this context is that Dutch nationals omitting to timely renew their passport (prior to the expiration date), and who happen to possess a second nationality, automatically lose their Dutch citizenship, at least if Dutch authorities are aware about it ...Even if they were born in The Netherlands and their parents were already over 10 generations indigenous inhabitants, still no pardon applies. Nationality loss is not sustained under any Dutch law, and practized impunedly by some thickheaded senior managers in Dutch national ministries, for obviously irrational motives 😉

HEDEN, mbt de Nederlandse nationaliteit is de eerste reactie van de overheid vandaag op het coalitieakkoord voornamelijk over criminelen en terroristen. Ondanks hiervoor al regelingen in de wetgeving zijn gaat men kijken wat er nog meer gedaan kan worden om deze hun nationaliteit te ontnemen. Mijn persoonlijke visie is dat de huidige wetgeving terroristen en misdadigers al voldoende kan aanpakken. Deze hebben daardoor zelfs meer rechten dan de gemiddelde Nederlander welke zijn nationaliteit automatisch kan verliezen. Ik neem geen terroristen of misdadigers als klant aan en heb daar ook geen behoefte aan. Dus... geen probleem. Wel stelt de overheid voor immigranten en buitenlanders (in het land) het volgende:--"Buitenlanders die onze nationaliteit willen aannemen doen, waar dat mogelijk is, afstand van hun andere nationaliteit. Dit is reeds bestaande wetgeving. Beleidsmatig is het mogelijk dit strenger toe te passen." -- En daarna is het stil. We weten dat het merendeel van deze immigranten aspirant-Nederlanders meer aan belastinggeld etc aan de economie en schatkist bijdragen dan de gemiddelde Nederlander. Maar als NL liever geen slimme hardwerkende expats/immigranten uit de VS, Australië, Engeland, India, Taiwan, Japan, Nieuw Zeeland, etc wil dan moet men inderdaad zo door gaan en het reeds negatieve en harde beleid nog harder maken. De schatkist zal het uiteindelijk wel voelen. Ondertussen is er verder nog steeds geen nieuws over onze eigen Nederlandse expats en migranten in den Vreemde. Het automatisch (onverwacht en ongewild) verlies van je Nederlandse nationaliteit blijft zo dus nog steeds een ongeadresseerde problematiek. Weer eens overschaduwd en verward door de al oude Nederlandse xenofobie.Terminologie Stellingen:- Buitenlanders zijn geen buitenlanders meer als ze in het land wonen.- Vreemdelingen zijn niet vreemd als ze ingeschreven staan en bekend zijn.- Oud-Nederlanders zijn veelal niet oud maar helaas wel allemaal voormalig-Nederlanders, veel, zo niet de meeste, ongewild.

Ik zag hoe Brexit met dezelfde retoriek als nu in NL begon. De gemiddelde Brit ging meteen al economisch sterk achteruit. Er werd gesteld, dat is een tijdelijk iets, een offer voor meer zelfstandigheid. Maar Uiteindelijk gingen alleen de rijken er op vooruit en nu speelt men met de nummers om het goed te praten. Ondertussen ging stilletjes de rechtsstaat er op achteruit en weten de Britse populisten hoe het politieke machtsspelletje te manipuleren. Democratie? Meerderheid? Oorzaak, economie en politieke apathie groot deel volk en jaren van beïnvloeding van de media hype waarbij het concept 'onafhankelijk objectieve journalisme' vaak ver te zoeken was. Oude technieken... beïnvloed wat men leest en ziet.. kan lezen en zien...

Just a post to show that not all Israeli's condone the violence by the state and its military. Israel as a state and government has a lot to answer for. Hamas as an organisation, and many if not most of its members, has a lot to answer for. And there are Israeli and Palestinian victims on both sides, many of them innocents. It is up to anyone with a gun in theirhand, or a finger on a (proverbial) trigger, at all (leadership) levels to take responsibility and stop any further escalation. One wrong doesn't justify another. And ultimately objective/independent tribunals/courts will need to hold everyone to account.

Sounds so very familiar. The Netherlands now as well. And lessons from the Australia experiment also ignored, in fact glorified. Sometimes I wonder why I live/lived in those countries during those times? Am I jinxed? Why can't we be a bit less like a torch bearing incited maniac blinded crowd blaming scapegoats for political failings? Which country is a bit more scientific in its policies and opinions? Where to find a bit more common sense? I may want to move again...

Helaas, ik zie het groeiende extreme in de samenleving ook op een afstandje in mijn Nederland, maar ook in mijn geadopteerde Engeland en Australië, en op vele andere plekken in de wereld waar ik banden mee heb. "Afglijden" is helaas het goed woord. Media, economie, combinatie van vele (andere) redenen? En ja, vooral in Nederland gaat de contradictie op "We zijn super inclusief hoor, maar je moet wel net als ons zijn." Nog meer dan in sommige andere landen die men in NL als ouderwets, onontwikkeld, oppressief etc ziet. Nee, in Nederland wordt je helaas maar al te snel met een glimlach de rug toegekeerd en uitgestoten. Nederland is (nog niet) zo verbaal of fysiek agressief als sommige andere plekken in de wereld, maar ik vind het maar een hypocriet land (geworden). En de pijn die men elkaar zo aandoet is er niet minder door.
